 Octavia Albuquerque an ex- MLC , a Rajyotsava awardee, and Founder MBeing the daughter of a Deputy Collector and later through marriage she was the daughter-in-law of the late Felix Pai Albuquerque, the famous tile business magnate of Mangaluru, Smt Octavia got the exposure and opportunity to turn philanthropic dreams and desires into reality. Her husband the late Cyril Albuquerque too was a guiding force and encouragement to her in all her activities. Unfortunately he passed away when she was just 54 years old but yet she did not deter from her set goals of doing good to society.ember of Cheshire Home-.
Octavia Albuquerque is an Institution by herself ! in Mangalore, Known to all , she is fondly called 'Otty Bai'.Octavia was the third child of Rao Sahib Francis and Lily Lobo. She was a high spirited, a talented actor who bagged all the main parts at the St.Agnes college and ever since then her life has been a stage. Married to the dashing Cyril Albuquerque she made a windsom bride. A doting father in law brought out the many faceted diamond that is Octavia. Her nine children whom she affectionately calls her navaratnas followed in quick succession, but inspite of, she made time for all her social service projects, the Ladies Social Service League, The diocesan Council of Catholic Women, Cheshire Home, The Karnad Sadhashiv Rao trust, Mahatma Gandhi Peace foundation are a few to name among the 62 organisations she has been a member of. 
She was the 1st Muncipal President of mangalore, having accorded civic receptions to various dignitaries, the Maharaja of Mysore, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Internuncious, Governors et all. Later she was elected as the Member of Legislative Council of Mangalore and did Yomen service to the people. She received numerous awards, The Rajotsava Award and was on various boards and councils 69 ans still counting. She has represented the Bharat Scouts and Guides, Cheshire Home, women's Organisations all over the world. So much for a public life. 
As for her Private life, she is a devout Catholic and even today upbraids the parish priest if he misses to bring her communion to her. A marvelous cook though she claims to be impatient, her duck dum roast is a proof of the pudding.Her one weakness which she has made no efforts to conquer is her passionate love for chocolates. She unabashedly confesses that she is game to finish a whole box. And game she is for any kind of adventure, which has prompted her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren to affectionately call her soda -skoda nana.
Octavia today is an institution in Mangalore and a must see and visit on all of her numerous friends wish list.

Veteran freedom fighter B V Kakkilaya passed away

Mangalore, Jun 4: Veteran freedom fighter and well-known leader of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and former member of Parliament B V Kakkilaya passed away at 2 am on Monday June 4. He was 93. Kakkilaya was admitted to a private hospital on May 23 and was being treated for brain haemorrhage. He was on ventilator and his condition is said to have deteriorated two days ago. Born on April 11, 1919, Kakkilaya was the pioneer of the Karnataka unification movement. A prolific writer and scholar, BVK, as he was popularly known, was involved in several people’s movements since his early days and was instrumental in setting up the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) in Karnataka. He played an important role in bringing about land reforms in the state. Apart from being member of the Rajya Sabha in 1952-54, he was also a legislator in the Karnataka assembly from Bantwal in the 1970s.
