Mangalore;Dec07: Even as Ashwini Chidananda bagged a surprise gold in the women’s 400 metres hurdles with a timing of 56.15 seconds in Guangzhou, Kundapur in Udupi district, was celebrating her win.
Her parents, Chidananda Shetty, an agriculturist, and Yashoda, a housewife, have been flooded by congratulatory calls ever since Ashwini won a gold at the Asian games. Sweets were exchanged and crackers were burst on the occasion.
Chidananda said, “We are very happy with her win and were confident she would win a gold after she performed very well inthe heats. Soon after the heats, she called up and said, ‘Papa, I’ve done well in the heats. I’ll give it my best shot in tomorrow’s event’.”
Though Ashwini called home after the victory, her parents could not speak to her till around 7 pm due to some telecom problem.Chidananda said Ashwini was disciplined, punctual and hard-working and would never compromise on practice. From Class I, she would wash her own clothes. She is also an animal lover.Ashwini, an employee of the Railways, is the youngest of the three children.
